The FreeNet Project is a project that was created to become a second (alternative) internet. This project is designed to have it's own system of DNS, Web, and other servers and will be run through a large mesh network to ensure free access to all individuals and the most reliable method of connectivity. FreeNet will work completely autonomous of the internet, funhctioning all on its own and allowing end-users to easily add existing servers to the network.

FreeNet Project

The FreeNet Project is a project designed to create a free alternative to the modern-day internet. FreeNet is designed to run completely independent of the internet, complete with it's own DNS, Web, Email, and data storage servers. FreeNet is designed to be easy to learn and familiar for new users.

FreeNet would require NO special hardware or software for connectivity and browsing. New users may connect and browse FreeNet pages using a common web-browser (such as the one being used to view this page).

What separates FreeNet from other Similar Projects?

There are many other Similar Projects in existence, MeshNet, just to name one. The primary difference that separates FreeNet from these other "alternative internet" projects is really a few simple ones.

  • FreeNet works completely independent of the internet. With other projects a regular internet connection is almost required which defeats the purpose. FreeNet is designed to be completely autonomous.
  • FreeNet relies heavily on strong organization and structure within the project ensuring the continuity of the project.
  • FreeNet encourages constant communication between project members and coordinators to ensure that all persons involved with the project are performing actions that is beneficial to the project.
